Communication: How it speaks to us on so many levels...
Have you ever been strangely attracted to an advertisement or even just a poster at college? It isn’t a coincidence and it is definitely not a miracle. The easier it is for the receiver to understand the objective of the message, the chance of them remembering it skyrocket. These messages don’t have to be pen and paper simple, but instead, straight to the point, you are trying to convey.
The visual
should contain images that directly reflect the narrative you want to
translate. The pictures and video in a message can speak many different
dialects for the viewer. For example, you don’t have to have some verbally tell
you, in a television commercial, that a company’s product makes you feel good.
The most likely will have visuals of individuals smiling in one form or
another and this can be directly or indirectly related to the actual product.
This is just one example of nonverbal communication but is very important when
creating ways to deliver messages to your target audience.
Color is a huge
factor in visual communication. It plays a role in everything, from the text on
the screen to the images and symbols you see displaying your message; color is
king. Color should represent the message’s mood and focus. For example, imagine
if a commercial for Barbie had its primary color as brown and yellow. It
wouldn’t feel like a Barbie commercial because the products are tailored toward
an audience who doesn’t connect those colors very much with dolls. The other
visual aspects could be great, but if the color isn’t on point, then it is hard
to pull off a well-deliverable message.
With well-designed
audio tracks, the listener should not pay attention to it too much. For
example, if the audio is done correctly, then the audio shouldn’t be all
someone focuses on, but accompanies the visual so well so put forth a great
message. The message should be clearly spoken and have a clear, well-spoken
script. The one speaking should also be picked based on the tone of voice
suitable for the message.
Apple Inc. comes
to mind when one thinks of excellent visual communication. Their messages are short,
simple, and concise, but feature visuals that display their products in forms
of art, especially in magazine ad spaces.
Nintendo has always been about utilizing a sense of “togetherness” when promoting their gaming systems. For their Nintendo Switch commercial, they were able to demonstrate how their console(s) were able to bring people together to have a great time, which leaves an imprint on you, the consumer, to experience that same feeling.
Target is a company that utilizes a primary color more than most competitors. They display the color red in many commercials so that when you see the color red, there is the chance that you might think of Target.
By using these
tools, it’s possible to capture many audiences with ease. And with mastery, can lead you to quite a successful career in the long run.
